About The Project

Mystic Seaport has partnered with the Connecticut Teacher of the Year Council (TOY) since 2014 to provide a three-day intensive summer professional development program to the TOY finalists, semi-finalists, and their designees. Participants learn how to use the Museum and its collections in their classrooms through active participation and interaction with a variety of experts, hands-on activities, primary source workshops, and guided exploration of the exhibits and grounds of Mystic Seaport.

During the three day program, teachers:

  • learn about object-based teaching strategies in the museum/classroom through primary source workshops and hands-on activities on the grounds of the Museum;
  • learn how to integrate the Mystic Seaport for Educators website into their classrooms;
  • utilize museum objects and exhibits as a forum for interdisciplinary investigations; and
  • develop lesson plans based on information acquired during the institute.
