zoomable artifact image here

Man's sailor suit bottom- white linen trousers. Blue piping along waist and front flap. Mother-of-pearl buttons (some replaced). Shield and double scroll design sewn with white thread at flap ends. Grommets center of back for waist adjustments. Maker is said to have served aboard the Monitor during the Civil War. Donor states: "Obviously the suit is made to wear ashore to impress the girls, as it is much too fancy for sea duty."
