Baleen and Ivory Riding Crop

Riding crop with a twisted baleen shaft, copper alloy ferrule, and an ivory handle carved in the shape of a heart outline with heart-shaped void at center and slightly squared-off base. The handle has four silver-colored metal pins attaching case shaft into base of handle, one on each side. Baleen broken and separating at twisted portion of shaft, slightly above midpoint of cane. Made by Walter C. Van Horn while on board whaling bark SUNBEAM, 1886-1890.
