Oil painting on board by James E. Buttersworth, "Ocean Scene, Henrietta Scudding."  The scene is from the Great Ocean Race of December 1866, which the schooner yacht Henrietta won.  Henrietta was later lost at sea, on December 16, 1872. 

The painting is signed in the lower right corner, "JE Buttersworth."  James Edward Buttersworth was an Anglo-American artist, born in 1817, in Middlesex County, England.  He worked in England until about 1845, then emigrated to the United States.  A well-known marine artist, he worked for N.Currier and Currier & Ives from 1847-1865.  He died in 1894 in West Hoboken, New Jersey.
