This carved shell was brought from Egypt by Captain George Dunn Gilderdale (master of the whaling bark PERU), c. 1855-1860; "MARIA DORATA" upper left side of smaller carved shell decorated with seated female figure. Provenance: Capt Gilderdale to his daughter Lizzie E. Miner (Mrs. Frank Miner) to their daughter Elizabeth Hooper Mider to her brother Dr. Donald Miner, October 1926.
