Description

Dry card compass from smack sloop Caroline, built made by Merrill & Sons, NY. (Caroline built  circa 1830 in Noank, CT; Capt. Arthur Rathbun). Marked CAROLINE in lead pencil. Brass bowl, painted light lead inside, aluminum outside. No glass. Box painted grey. Swings freely and registers North. Period possibly 1875-1900, Connecticut. Card diameter 6 1/2"; box 10"x10"x6 3/4".
