Photograph taken during the Bradford and Hayes expedition to the Arctic in 1869.
The handwritten description on the mat reads: "An Esquimaux Igloo or winter hut with its occupants. They are mades of stones and a sort of moss or turf. The entrance at the left is about 30 inches high - and one has to crawl almost on his hands and knees previous to entering the house..."
Please note that the use of the word "Esquimaux," within this description, is in quotations, copied from the primary source material.
