Classroom Demonstration

Take a flat surface and a rounded surface and set them up, securely, edgewise on a desk.  Which one do the students think is sturdier if we roll a golfball against them? Why?

Now roll a golfball against them.  Note how the force is greater against the flat surface while the ball should be deflected by the sloped surface.  This is a simple way to demonstrate the design of an ironclad.
