A Look at Immigration

Research Project

In addition to people, the ships that carried the immigrants also carried ideas, such as cultural traditions, language, and other elements of their culture.

Research the various ways in which these ideas ended up influencing American life in general.  Consider that many immigrant groups wound up in large cities, concentrated in communities where they maintained their own customs and languages.  How do we see these customs and traditions preserved today?

Worksheet Activity: Photo Analysis

Take a look at this photograph. What do the expressions on the faces of these people tell you about their situation? Do they look excited? Anxious? Nervous? Relieved?  How can you tell?  Use the photograph analysis worksheet in the sidebar to learn how to understand this primary source better.

Creative Writing Assignment

Choose one person in this photograph, and create their story.  Think about questions, such as where are they coming from?  Where are they going?  What is their occupation?  Where is their family?  Why do you think they are immigrating?  What do you think they'll do when they finally are US Citizens?  Use your imagination and express your person's story in a two page essay.  Start out the essay by describing the person and the setting of the photograph.
