Creative Writing Assignment

Imagine you have been hired as the ship’s doctor for a long voyage.  What challenges will you be facing in keeping your crew healthy?  If you could have ONE item from today (the 21st century), to help you on an early to mid 19th century voyage, what would it be?  Why?  Write an essay first describing what difficulties you may face during the voyage, and explain how you made the decision to bring whichever 21st century item you decided upon, and what use it may be to you.

Using the artifact analysis worksheet, fill in the information to make some observations about the medicine chest. Does it seem well equipped for a long voyage? What do you notice about it?

Compare or Contrast - Essay or Conversation

Compare the medicines listed in the medical chest with those your family would have in your medicine cabinet at home. How are they different? Are there any treatments that seem the same? Why do you think they stopped using certain medicines, or continued using others?

Point of View Writing Assignment

Pick a point of view: that of a ship’s doctor, an ill crew member, or a crew member with no medical knowledge who has been tasked with acting as the ship’s doctor. Now, imagine that you are out at sea on a long voyage, and another crew member has taken ill. Using your chosen point of view, write a piece describing your thoughts on the situation, your reactions, how you feel it’s being handled, and what you may be doing.
