Capt. Thomas Cole's Hornbook

Capt. Thomas Cole's hornbook; page with alphabet and numbers from 1-10, covered by sheet of transparent horn. Horn is attached by metal frame to rectangular piece of wood with handle extension. Handle has hole through end with leather strap. Such an item was used in colonial times. On back is piece of paper with writing: "My grandfather/ Thomas Cole of/ Voluntown learned/ his letters from/ this old Horn Book/ about 100 yrs. ago./ S.C. - 1838". Hornbook is encased in hinged wooden box with glass front and back and with handle of hornbook protruding out.
