Whale stamp with no handle, carved from single block of wood, stained black from use. Whale stamps were used in the logbooks of whaling ships. This stamp shows only the flukes of the whale, which indicates whales seen or pursued but not taken. Adhesive label on side reads "Ship/ CLEMATIS/ 1849." The ship CLEMATIS of New London, CT worked in the Indian Ocean whaling grounds and was lost at the Solomon Islands in September of 1861.
