About Andrea Sias
Mrs. Andrea Sias teaches science in Bloomfield, Connecticut, at the Global Experience Magnet School (GEMS). She embraces an exploratory, hands-on approach to teaching science with a focus on scientific inquiry and real-world application. She believes that experiences create a hunger for learning and provide a vehicle to learn the standards in a way that is exponentially more meaningful than simply memorizing a fact or looking up a statistic.
In addition to being named the 2015 Bloomfield Teacher of the year, Andrea was also a semi-finalist in the state-wide Connecticut Teacher of the Year competition. At GEMS, Andrea has served as Community Partnership Liaison in which she helped organize student experiences on the local, national, and international level. Andrea has traveled internationally to Ireland, Costa Rica, China and France as well as across the U.S. to build partnerships with schools and provide students with opportunities to extend their learning beyond the walls of the classroom.
Andrea has also contributed to the GEMS community as a TEAM mentor for new staff, School Testing Coordinator, member of the School Wide Data Team, advisor to the Environmental Club, and a member of the Positive School Climate Committee. Andrea earned her BS in Biology from Quinnipiac University in 2009 and her MAT in Secondary Education from Quinnipiac in 2010.
Andrea created her lesson plan, "Telling Time, Back in Time," during the 2016 Connecticut Teacher of the Year Professional Development Program at Mystic Seaport.
