About John Woitovich
John Woitovich was born and raised on Long Island. He moved to Connecticut to pursue a career in education and currently works as a 7th and 8th grade special education teacher at John Winthrop Middle School in Deep River, Connecticut.
Prior to teaching, John worked as a scientist for the United States Geological Survey, working on projects centered around water sciences. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Science and Biology at Long Island University and a Masters of Science in Education and Special Education at Touro College. While working on his undergraduate degree, he enrolled in Ocean Classroom and had the opportunity to live aboard the tall ship Harvey Gamage sailing throughout the West Indies, Caribbean, and up the Eastern Seaboard.
In his free time, John enjoys kayaking, backpacking, traveling, songwriting, beekeeping, and genealogical research. He decided to get involved with the MSE fellowship program because of his love for science and history as well as all things maritime. Projects for Mystic Seaport include an interactive google map created by entering detailed information from a 19th century captain’s journal.
