About this Lesson
This inquiry-based lesson focuses on how students can compare and contrast treatments of the same topic using a variety of visual and written sources. The archives at Mystic Seaport Museum are home to a treasure trove of items created by sailors at sea. The online collection of these resources is ever growing, so the general public can have access to these rare artifacts and documents at the touch of a button.
This mini-unit is designed for middle school or high school students to independently and cooperatively explore numerous sources that showcase the life of a sailor outside the tedious humdrum of everyday work. Ultimately, students should answer the following essential question in an analytical essay: How does art play a role in the lives of sailors?
