Martin, Lyme, Conn., attempting to persuade him not to go on a whaling voyage saying that life on such a vessel "is the most dogish life that ever fell to the lot of mortal man" and he would rather "be painted black and sold to a Southern planter . . . than be doomed to the forecastle of a whale ship."
